Another crisis now "inevitable"

Health care is going to bankrupt America?

Perhaps, if things don't change significantly in the coming years and decades, but we might not have to worry if the President and Congress stay on their current path.

Without more stringent financial system reforms, "another crisis – a bigger crisis that weakens both our financial sector and our larger economy – is more than predictable, it is inevitable," claims a Report commissioned by the nonpartisan Roosevelt Institute.

While Congress is set to vote on regulatory reform proposals essentially crafted by Democrats, a plethora of bipartisan experts are warning that the current bill "must be beefed up to prevent banks from continuing to engage in high-risk investing that precipitated the near-collapse of the U.S. economy in 2008."

Instead, health care and Toyotagate have controlled the attention of Congress and the President. Assuredly, both are serious issues, but are they the most serious issues facing America right now? Even worse, when Democrats have focused on financial reform, their focus has mostly been limited to consumer protections.

Yet, Today's Investor's Business Daily, for instance, claims that consumer protections had nothing to do with the previous crisis. That might not mean much coming from a pro-business publication on its own, however, the Roosevelt Institute report strongly confirms much of IBD's contention. Ultimately, it's not necessarily that consumer protection laws aren't worthy of reform, although IBD does make that assertion, it's that such reforms will do little - if anything - to prevent the financial system from causing an even greater crisis now that there are fewer banks.

"Risk-taking at banks," LOUDLY warns the Roosevelt Report, "will soon be larger than ever."

As ABC paraphrases, "The report warns that the country is now immersed in a "doomsday cycle" wherein banks use borrowed money to take massive risks in an attempt to pay big dividends to shareholders and big bonuses to management – and when the risks go wrong, the banks receive taxpayer bailouts from the government."

Yet, Congress has done and is doing little to prevent this problem.

Obviously, health care is an important topic that must be addressed, but now is not the time to make health care the Administration's central focus. Besides, with so much low-hanging, bi-partisan fruit on the health care tree, why not just pick it? Let's just get health care reform rolling. Even a baby step can quickly turn into a sprint.

For now, let's just make sure that the loopholes in our financial system don't destroy the American economy long before any health care reforms can lead to any financial gains.

Teabaggers: The best thing for Democrats

The best chance liberals have?

I love irony.

According to many political watchers, the Tea Party Movement is causing the Republican Party to swing far right. While I'm sure that Teabaggers think this is great news, I'm certain they are sadly mistaken.

What Teabaggers don't realize is that the American majority is centrist, and they will never be as 'conservative' as these radicals, just as they'll never be as 'liberal' as the far left, which is why Democrats are almost certain to lose seats in the next election. Nonetheless, that doesn't mean those seats will be filled with conservative Republicans.

If Republicans believe Teabaggers are the key to political success in America, any success they have will be short-lived. Liberal Democrats and Teabaggers are just opposite sides of the same coin of useless, extremist partisanship. Dissent and disagreement our important political needs, that is true, but in the end ALL of us have to come together to move forward.

Just another reason to keep it simple in the next election, and just vote against the incumbents of BOTH parties.

Worried about our trillion dollar deficit

Ouch. Hillary Clinton slammed ex-Treasury Secretary Allan Greenspan for "outrageous" policies during his tenure that have resulted in a skyrocketing national deficit and become a national security risk.

So why not some out of-the-box actions, Mrs Clinton? For instance, let's stop importing so much foreign oil into the US. In fact, let's declare war on foreign oil dependence.

While I'm not a big fan of oil drilling in the US - it seems a step backward to me - I'd be willing to compromise if such an energy bill included new tax credits for hybrid cars, clean diesel vehicles, etc.

Moreover, lets attack our natural gas supplies immediately and aggressively. Its cleaner than gasoline and its right here in America. Furthermore, it sends the message that a new world order is coming in energy, and America WILL be energy independent by 2030.

Seriously, foreign oil dependence is already a significant threat to national security, adding our national debt atop this threat only adds insult to injury.

Jobs. Cheaper and cleaner energy. Less Debt. Safer country. Natural gas might not be perfect and its only a piece of the larger solution, but it can be a hugely important piece, especially in the interim, as we develop more long term solutions.

And, frankly, any politician against such change shouldn't be in office. In fact, the fact that there isn't such a movement storming through Congress already makes me think most politicians in Congress right now don't belong. Just another reason to vote against the incumbents.

So, c'mon Madam Secretary, outside of the President no one is in a better position to lead the charge against foreign oil dependence. Besides it'd sure look pretty Presidential.

Rangel breaks law, I mean Congressional rule

Only some bribes are really bribes?

Charlie got busted.

Listen. I like Charlie Rangel. I have no doubts that, overall, Rangel is probably a pretty cool guy.

Still, he took 'bribe' money whether he knew it or not, and he probably knew it - or at least someone very close to him did. That might be OK if Rangel was some wet-behind-the-ears freshman Congressman, but he's not, he's a 40-year veteran whom knows how the game is played.

And that's the problem. Congress is just a game, a power grab. And both political parties - the system - are always 'ALL IN'.

That's why it's time to vote against the incumbents. I don't just mean Charlie Rangel because of some minor ethics violation. I mean John McCain and EVERY other incumbent as well.

It's not personal. It's not even political. It's just time for change, REAL change.

Health care reform to create 4 million jobs? Is Pelosi nuts?

400,000 jobs immediately

OK. Maybe I'm the moron, but I'm beginning to wonder about the competence of Nancy Pelosi. The other day Nancy claimed that the current health care reform package will create 4 million new jobs, 400,000 of them almost immediately.

While many of the new jobs would be in health care, according to Pelosi, others would be in private industry - both related and unrelated to health care, I can only assume, because I only have a fraction of her full comments.

Regardless, I have to ask, seriously?

First, let's start with the health care jobs. Today, one might argue our health care system is filled with too many jobs in the form of redundancy and compartmentalized bureaucracy. That's one reason why the idea of a single health payer system is an appealing idea. Such a system, in theory, could help reduce this redundancy and over-lapping bureaucracy with a simpler more efficient system.

Of course, the insurance industry could also agree on standards, with the help of the government, to reduce this redundancy with intelligent, web-enabled standards.

So, the question becomes, who typically does a better job: big bureaucracy or big business?

To be honest, I'm not sure. In fact, I'm not sure either ever really does a great job. However, perhaps an analogy can shed some light on my confusion. I know many teachers. Most of them believe in the insurance reform package and a government run health care system. Yet, ironically, they hate the bureaucracy of the completely government-funded LA School District. But won't government run health care lead to a similar kind of bureaucracy that these teachers hate so much?

But, back to the jobs. Is the reform bill really creating new health care jobs, or simply replacing old insurance jobs with new government (and better paying I'd bet) jobs? Likewise, in the interim, who is paying the salaries of these new jobs? The government? With what? More treasury bonds that we'll practically have to beg China to buy?

Perhaps, eventually, these 400,000 jobs will reduce redundancy and costs, yet how much will they cost in the interim? 400,000 x $60,000 x 5 years certainly isn't chump change, and that's probably a very conservative estimate. Still, are they really new jobs, or just new jobs replacing old jobs? How much bang for the buck are we really getting? Then again, maybe a few hundred billion spent on health care jobs is nothing compared to wasted health care costs.

Nonetheless, what happens after these people have been on the dole for a few years, reducing redundancy, and they realize the sooner they end redundancy, the sooner they no longer have such a great paying job and such great benefits?

Second, Pelosi also goes on about how reducing health care costs will create a more dynamic economy and a more dynamic entrepreneurial environment. In essence, I agree, the idea seems to have some merit. However, won't health care reform, minimally, lead to more economic hardship in the short term in the form of more national debt and more taxes, particularly in the short term, without any real gains for many years? That's been my understanding of the CBO's work on the matter thus far.

Thus, at least in the interim, won't we simply be replacing one hardship with another? Moreover, can really create a dynamic entrepreneurial business environment with increased corporate taxes?

Sure you can say we'll keep taxes low on small businesses, until they become successful. Then we'll tax the crap out of them. Well, then why would any business want to be too successful? Better yet, why not develop new forms of ownership that enable successful companies to be broken up into smaller companies so that they don't become too successful in the eyes of the tax man?

Isn't Congress infamous for such loopholes?

Ultimately, it seems to me that Congress should listen to the polls. There are reforms that can be passed today, they just can't be passed as part of some huge health care bill. We the people simply do not believe that Congress knows everything and acts solely for the benefit of the people. Besides, anytime Congress has rushed industry-changing reform they've always included massive pork and ridiculous loopholes.

Yes, America needs health care reform, but when there is so much distrust, that reform must be slowly rolled out, especially initially. And, honestly, fixing the health care system will be no easy fix. Honestly, most of the costs are driven by our fear of death and our poor health habits. Can nationalization or a single-payer system really cure those ailments? I'm pretty sure even President Obama has expressed the same sentiment.

Isn't it time for an honest conversation about health care and its problems?

Toyotagate: Congress makes Toyota look like a Saint

34 deaths. That's what Toyota's unintended acceleration scandal has caused.

Yes. It's horrible and Toyota deserves some vilification, nonetheless, as I wrote for Soultek.com, "for more than a decade Congress let 10 - 20,000 people die every year because it was good for the Big 3 and it was good for Big Oil.

I mean, c'mon. What would you do if you knew you could save 10,000 lives per year by forcing automakers to build a slightly less profitable vehicle?

Well, for decades Congress certainly hasn't done much. The US auto industry is just too important, so important, in fact, that 10,000 lives per year have been expendable. Yet, Congress is in an uproar over 34 deaths?

How did these 34 deaths become so much more important than the 10's of thousands killed by unnecessary rollover deaths?

How can Congress be so biased? So blinded? Isn't it obvious?

We the people have only one voice left, our vote, and while many might believe the vote to be irrelevant and meaningless, I assure you, the vote can have meaning if we work together and vote against the incumbents.

Just like many recent polls, the latest Rasmussen poll finds that 71 percent of Americans think Congress is doing a 'poor' job, and only 10 percent believe Congress is doing a good job.

According to Rasmussen, "(70%) of voters say Congress has not passed any legislation that would significantly improve life".

So, what would the Founders think?

My guess is that they'd wonder why the voters haven't yet acted. It's time to clean house. It's time to vote against the incumbents.

Best health care still in the US?

What's the real deal in America?

There is no doubt that there is a problem with the health care system in the US. In my opinion, the main problem, however, is not necessarily the system itself, but rather the incredibly unhealthy habits of a majority of Americans.

Unfortunately, neither national health care nor more competition, etc. is going to change that fact. Nonetheless, health care is a problem that America must address.

Still, the first rule of thumb should be: do no harm. The second rule of thumb should be: accept that the system isn't completely broken.

The fact is America provides some of the best health care in the world. When the rich and famous of the world get sick, such as the Premier of Canada, they don't rely on the hospitals in their national health care systems, they come to America. In the end, America offers the best health care money can buy. Unfortunately, most American just don't have enough money.

Ultimately, fixing the health care system will not be easy and there will be NO easy fixes. More important, fixing the system will take time, probably a lot of time. Moreover, fixing the health care system will take bipartisanship, something the last several sessions of Congress - some led by Republicans, some led by Democrats - have been completely incapable of achieving.

Thus, it's time to clean house, on BOTH sides of the political aisle. We can't just continue to vote for the other party every time Congress fails America. It's time to vote against the power structure, against the political structure of America.

It's time to vote against the incumbents.

Voting can be revolutionary

86 percent of Americans believe the US government is broken. Fortunately, however, most believe the government can be fixed.

So, what's the fix?

Voting for Tea-Baggers? Please. Conservatives? Liberals? Democrats? Republicans? Whatever! We've flipped back and forth between these groups over and over and over, and our problems only get worse. How many more times do we need to repeat this mistake before we realize our insanity?

Hundreds of years ago, the only recourse for the people was to violently revolt. Today, however, revolutions don't have to be violent. In one day, the voting both can dramatically change America.

Let's send a message to Washington. The People, not special interests and corporations, own America and we want it back. Let's revolt. Let's vote against the incumbents!

According to the annual Conservative Political Action Conference presidential straw poll, a majority of conservative Republicans poled "wished the Republican Party had a better field of candidates to choose from", while choosing Ron Paul as their top pick.

Discontent in the Republican Party? Why should anyone be surprised? Poll after poll shows that many voters in both parties are unhappy with the Congressional leadership of both parties, so it isn't surprising to see libertarian Ron Paul, the most different Republican, resonate.

Good. Hopefully this sentiment lasts into the upcoming elections. It's time for voters to think different, to seek real change, and about the only thing voters can do to achieve real change - not just a change in party rule - is vote against the incumbents.

63 percent of Americans want to vote against Congressional incumbents, according to the latest polls, but will they?

While these are the most anti-incumbent results in polling history, angst against incumbency has been growing for many years. Yet, the results at the polls have not really reflected this growing pre-election anger in most instances.

Is this finally the time all that changes? Could 50 percent Congressional turnover, or more, actually be possible? Or, will angst-filled voters simply avoid the voting booth in their typical apathetic manner?

So, we all know that the Supreme Court shot down campaign financing reform laws. So what?

Were such laws really going to make a difference, or just provide the appearance of change? Somehow I doubt we'd have seen any real increase in turnover - change - in our political system.

Besides, if incumbency were knocked down to 50 percent, wouldn't it be that much harder for those funding campaigns to protect their investments? Dysfunctional. That's what Senator Evan Bayh, a centrist Democrat, called Congress earlier this week.

So what? It's just politics as usual, right?

Wrong. Economists are worried that decades of such partisanship coupled with the current recession have pushed America to the tipping point of great danger, particularly in terms of America's every growing and staggering large national debt. Yet, few politicians seem interested in anything other than blame, although most experts believe that both sides are deserving off blame according to a recent NYTimes piece.

Really, can there be any doubt that our politicians are failing us, on both sides of the aisle?

Isn't it simply time to start anew? Isn't it time to vote out the incumbents, regardless of party? Isn't it time for real change?

Partisanship. Is there a better word to describe Congress? Unfortunately, it isn't just Congress, it's the radical left and right of the citizenry as well.

It's either their way or no way, yet neither the far left nor the far right represent the views of the MAJORITY of Americans. These two groups of extremists, however, are the most vocal, organized and funded, so they significantly shape the voice of their respective parties because the majority stays silent.

I say screw both Republicans and Democrats. America is neither 100 percent Republican, nor 100 percent Democrat and it never will be! In fact, if all the non-Voters voted as a bloc for an Independent Presidential candidate, he or she WOULD win.

Sure, politicians do need to stand for their Party sometimes, but politicians are supposed to represent the People, not the Party. Today, however, the Party is more important than the people.

Most Americans Do Not, on a daily basis, think of themselves as Democrats or Republicans. We think of ourselves as AMERICANS just trying to survive from paycheck to paycheck as our tax dollars pay for ever more earmarks and pork-barrel projects. Democrats and Republicans, unfortunately, could seem to care less about AMERICANS that do not think exactly as they do. Shame on you.

WE, The People, however, don't stop and ask to which Party someone belongs when help is needed.

Some are calling President Obama the greatest President ever. I think it's way too early to make such a statement. However, if Obama does become the greatest President ever, he can still only serve the US as President for 8 years, or two terms.

However, many in Congress have been in Congress for decades, as there are no term limits. Is that really fair?

Yet, not one Republican is really addressing this issue, nor are any Democrats. Despite the fact that military-industrial complex that runs our government via cheap oil has created two wars in the Middle East, 9/11 and created massive pollution, not one mainstream politician is taking real action to change this.

Red state, blue state divide: One party will never rule!

"Despite Democratic promises that the House Rules Committee would operate much differently in the new majority, it is as partisan as ever," writes the Hill.

"Furious with how the powerful panel has been directed this year, all four Republican members of the Rules Committee took to the floor Tuesday night to air their grievances publicly."

Wow! Who woulda thunk partisanship wouldn't stop just because Democrats took office?

The partisanship between the left and right hasn't abated in decades. Each side wants to rule America supremely and, therefore, constantly seeks to tarnish the image of the other side, even at the expense of needed legislation. And, every piece of legislation that does pass is riddled with earmarks, pork and other special projects - costing average American taxpayers billions and billions of dollars.

Of course, whom can blame them?

Average, centrist America has let the radical right and left control both major parties. Thus, average Americans continue to get screwed by Congress and the White House, and nothing is going to change that until America Votes out all Incumbents, or both parties begin to realize that their job is constructive consensus, not violent partisanship.

Is partisanship a necessary evil in politics or the sign of a dysfunctional political system?
